NINOTCHKA

When Ernst Lubitsch, the wittiest fimmaker of classic Hollywood and director of NINOTCHKA, was asked to define the inimitable "Lubitsch Touch", he famously said, "At least twice a day the most dignified human being is ridiculous." This pretty much sums up NINOTCHKA, the tale of a stiff and humorless Soviet envoy who travels to Paris and, in spite of all her political ideals, falls wildly in love with a goofy playboy. Greta Garbo, never known as a comedic actress, delivers one of the funniest performances of all time. Sophisticated satire and slapstick pratfalls have never been more perfectly married.
