PRIDE & PREJUDICE (2005)

To be honest, I could watch any adaptation of Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, because Lizzie Bennett and Mr. Darcy are undisputably the greatest couple of all time. But Joe Wright's interpretation reigns surpreme with a spectacular cast, gorgeous cinematography and deliciously nuanced emotional tension. Keira Knightley is feisty, Donald Sutherland is curmudgeonly, Brenda Blethyn is flighty and Matthew Macfayden is devastatingly dreamy. Austen's clever dialogue remains mostly untouched, while the performers make the most of her charming wit and social satire. Whether it's from laughing or swooning (or both), PRIDE & PREJUDICE is guaranteed to leave you breathless. (Sarah Pitre)
